IND vs SL 2021: Analyzing the 3 possible opening batting combinations for India

3 possible opening batting combinations for India

The Indian team will play a series of limited-overs against Sri Lanka, starting July 18 (Sunday). The Men in Blue will play three ODIs followed by T20I at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The selectors have included six rookies in the squad in the absence of top-level cricketers, who are busy with the upcoming test series against England. Therefore, the Sri Lanka series provides an opportunity for young talents to make a mark on the bigger stage.

However, management will have some selection dilemmas before the first one-dayers. With India having a couple of talented incumbents in its ranks, the management led by Rahul Dravid will be sweating over choosing Shikhar Dhawan’s partner.

As a result, we tried to analyze three possible opening combinations for India against Sri Lanka:

Shikhar Dhawan and Devdutt Padikkal

The young southpaw from Karnataka is one of the main contenders to make his Indian debut in Sri Lanka. Devdutt Padikkal, who first impressed during IPL 2020 in the UAE, has been in brilliant shape ever since.

Padikkal, who won the Emerging Players Award at IPL 2020, enjoyed a brilliant career in national cricket earlier this year. He had 218 runs in six games at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, including the highest score of 99.

Then Padikkal followed him with a stellar run at the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he finished second for the most runs after Prithvi Shaw. The 21-year-old finished 737 runs in seven games with a staggering 147.40 average, including four centuries and three fifties.

With Shikhar Dhawan and Devdutt Padikkal backing an aggressive game, it will be a difficult time for Sri Lankan bowlers if they both get going together.

Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad

The talented batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad aims to use the batting tips teammates Chennai Super Kings MS Dhoni and Faf du Plessis on his first international tour.

Although he will have to fight Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal for the opening spot, Gaikwad has made a case for himself with a fifty-run hit in the team’s warm-up game in Colombo.

Ruturaj, who has gained confidence in the shadow of MS Dhoni, is the epitome of courage, endurance, and patience. The Maharashtra hitter will be the perfect complement to Shikhar Dhawan’s aggressive playing style.

The 24-year-old can hold the boat tight from one end and hit long and will be on the lookout for opportunities on the Indian jersey.

Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw, who is returning to the Indian team, will be one of the pioneers in pairing up with skipper Shikhar Dhawan. The young man from Mumbai has had a dream career in recent months and will be desperate to seize this opportunity.

Shaw scored over 800 runs averaging over 165 for Mumbai in the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy, helping guide them to the title. His brilliant career continued at IPL 2021, where he racked up 308 runs in eight games before the tournament was suspended due to a bio-bubble gap.

The right-left combination for India at the top could pose a problem for Sri Lankan bowlers in the next series of limited overs.
