Narendra Modi Stadium, the first such public structure to be named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India, is situated within the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel sports enclave in Ahmedabad. It is owned and operated by the Gujarat Cricket Association.
With a capacity of 132,000 spectators, it is the largest cricket stadium in the world. The stadium has overtaken the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground, which has a capacity of 90,000 spectators.
Narendra Modi Stadium, formerly known as Sardar Patel Stadium, was built on November 12, 1983. It was first renovated in 2006 and has since become a regular venue for international matches in the city. It can also be said that it is the upgraded Biker Stadium and has a capacity of 1.32 lakh spectators.
The stadium has hosted matches during the 1987, 1996 and 2011 Cricket World Cups. It is noteworthy to mention that the stadium also hosted its first Pink Ball Test match between India and England on 24 February 2021.

Extend Capacity
- President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the renovated Sardar Patel Stadium on February 24, 2021.
- In 2015, the stadium was closed and demolished. It was rebuilt at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore.
- Scattered over 63 acres of land, the stadium has three entry points. A total of 3,000 cars and 10,000 two-wheelers can park on the premises.
Construction details
While Narendra Modi Stadium consists of four changing rooms and team facilities, 76 corporate boxes, state-of-the-art club facilities with three practice pitches, an indoor cricket academy and an Olympic swimming pool, it was planned and designed by POPULOUS, a firm of sports architecture based in Australia and was built in collaboration with India’s leading contractor, Larsen and Toubro. L&T is an Indian multinational conglomerate.
The stadium has two levels of seating: the lower bowl and the upper bowl. The upper bowl has Y-shaped columns located on the circumference of grids labeled G and H. These columns are labeled GY and HY. Primary radial beams are connected to these columns. The total area of the stadium is equivalent to that of 32 Olympic-sized football fields put together.

- In 1986-87, Sunil Gavaskar scored his 10,000th Test cricket run at the stadium.
